SUMMARY:Making waves: Is international R&I bringing a true blue economy within reach?
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, blue economy has moved steadily closer to the centre of political and policy radar screens around the world. Initially framed as the use of marine and maritime resources for economic growth\, the concept has expanded over time to the sustainable management and protection of ocean\, coastal and freshwater ecosystems – and along the way breathing fresh life into “nexus thinking” about the interrelationships between water\, energy and food. \nAs a nascent framework for planetary development\, blue economy holds vast potential\, but it also suffers from a lack of best practices\, clear governance and the limited scope and organisation of its applications to date.  Unsurprisingly\, the EU – along with the UN\, which launched the Decade of Sustainable Oceans in 2020\, and other like-minded countries – has been at the forefront of efforts to address these issues. Last year the European Commission launched one of its flagship missions under Horizon Europe to “Restore our Ocean and Waters”\, signalling the blue economy’s importance for its strategies in various policy areas\, ranging from energy to fisheries. The effort goes in parallel with the launch of the Sustainable Blue Economy co-funded partnership\, which aims at the creation of a climate-neutral\, sustainable and productive maritime economic area. \nNonetheless\, navigating in the darkness is not the best approach at sea\, and in this context research can provide a safe harbour. To reap the benefits coming from the marine environment\, and to avoid the depletion of its resources and its ability to help in the fight against climate change\, solid research\, data\, planning and cross-border cooperation will be crucial elements moving forward. This is already evident in some of the blue economy sectors that show the highest potential – from sustainable fishing and aquaculture\, to marine renewable energy and blue biotechnologies – but is equally true in more problematic domains like deep sea mining. Yet without clear scientific evidence of the impact of new practices and technologies\, the blue economy will suffer from barriers to implementation and a lack of investment. Both elements are crucial\, and they may well define if the blue economy is here to stay\, or just a passing wave. \nAgainst this backdrop\, what is the existing relationship between marine research\, the market and policymaking? How can a closer research-industry connection ensure start-ups\, innovative ideas\, and entrepreneurs the right incentives from the financial sector? How can regulators be presented with a clearer view of the benefits of sustainable marine environments in the context of wider political agendas? DESCRIPTION:The European Week of Regions and Cities is an annual conference dedicated to cohesion policy held in Brussels. This year\, EU-funded projects managed by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) will join the event’s four-day agenda\, bringing together researchers and specialists from various areas of expertise. \nAfter a successful edition in 2022 – where the event reached a record number of almost 20 000 participants\, 272 sessions and 528 partners – this year’s edition will continue to discuss common challenges for Europe’s regions and cities. By bringing together different socio-political actors\, the event will examine possible solutions on the debate on EU cohesion policy in a wider context. It will delve into the potential of co-creation as a means of fostering social innovation towards climate neutrality. Co-creation is a collaborative approach that encourages stakeholder participation in the design and implementation of solutions\, with the objective of producing more sustainable and socially beneficial outcomes. The MOSAIC project will feature at this event. \nAssessing the impact of Horizon 2020 funding on social innovation and going beyond \n11 October 2023 11:30 – 13:00 \nSocial innovation representatives from the Commission will present a report analysing the impact of Horizon 2020 funding on social innovation. This will serve as a basis for launching an open consultation on future programming and funding. The European Commission’s Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) and the Hubs for Circularity (H4C) aim to bridge this gap by facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing. This session will inform you about the services they provide to EU cities and regions and present innovative circular solutions. \n  \nSecuring and restoring our waters at a regional and local level \n11 October 2023 16:30 – 17:30 \nIn this workshop\, we discuss the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”. This Mission aims to protect and restore the health of our oceans and waters by combining innovative forms of governance and cooperation between regions with ways to better reach wider range of stakeholders. Representatives of regions and cities present the plans they have adopted to adhere to the Mission’s objectives. R&I outcomes to improve monitoring and detecting water pollution at the local level will also be presented. The EU-funded aqua3s project is featuring in the workshop. \n  \nAchieving Climate Neutral Cities through the Regeneration of Historic Urban Areas \n12 October 9:30-11:00 \nThe session discusses how to regenerate Historic Urban Areas in the co-creation of Climate Neutral City Contracts (CCC) for the EU Mission on Cities. A fresh new Policy Report issued by Horizon 2020 Innovation Actions CENTRINNO\, T-Factor and HUB-IN will be introduced. Then policymakers\, city-makers\, and researchers will discuss three main operational challenges in CCC (creative spaces; temporary uses; heritage revitalisation) in peer-learning exercises.

DESCRIPTION:The EU Industry Days are Europe’s flagship annual event focusing on key industrial policy discussions\, connecting industrial frontrunners\, and boosting the knowledge base of European industry. \nThe 2023 edition comprised a wide range of plenary and parallel sessions which focused on the main drivers\, opportunities and challenges of the green\, digital\, and resilient transition\, EU open strategic autonomy\, and the integration of Ukraine into the single market. \nThe 2023 edition gathered 1\,800 registrations from 68 nations\, including over 200 speakers. DESCRIPTION:Watch the conference videos here \nThe European Green Deal is arguably the biggest ambition of the current European Commission and EU leaders agree on the need to accelerate Europe’s transition to a net-zero industry. While the EU agreed to invest part of its 1.8 trillion budget euros into accelerating the transition to a more sustainable economy\, it needs to get better and faster at moving tech ideas towards the marketplace. Several related questions arise\, among which: How Europe’s climate policies and tools can help set the right research and investment priorities to help make it happen? What are the key priorities for climate-related research in the short and medium terms\, and how can EU funding support and leverage the success of green tech incubators\, entrepreneurs and international cooperation? What is the responsibility of large corporations in the process?
