SUMMARY:Co-Designing Diamond Open Access Recommendations and Guidelines for Research Funders\, Sponsors\, and Donors
DESCRIPTION:Science Europe is organising a co-design process to develop Diamond Open Access recommendations and guidelines for research Funders\, Sponsors\, and Donors (FSDs). As diamond open access initiatives gather momentum\, this co-design process is a timely opportunity for FSD experts to come together and discuss how they can provide effective financial support for diamond open access. \nThis meeting will provide a briefing on the development of diamond open access developments in Europe and beyond\, discuss opportunities and challenges for FSDs\, and have a first exchange on co-designing recommendations and guidelines. Two or more workshops will be organised starting in early 2024. Draft recommendations and guidelines will be used to engage FSD leadership in the second half of 2024. Final recommendations and guidelines will be published in March 2025. \nRegistration is available through the ‘Registration’ link above. The co-design process is open to FSDs in Europe. Although Science Europe represents 41 public research funding and performing organisations in 30 countries\, this process is explicitly also open to non-Science Europe members. \nThis co-design process is focussed on research funding organisations. Separate co-design processes for universities and other research performing organisations and policy makers will be organised by the European University Association and OPERAS. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Health & Life Science Sector Day – Health innovation and the future of medicines development Public S|B conference
DESCRIPTION:In April this year\, the European Commission issued its proposals for a comprehensive revision of the EU’s basic pharmaceutical legislation. Reflecting key lessons learned from COVID\, the proposals seek to create  an “innovation-and competitiveness-friendly” landscape in Europe for biomedical research and medicines development\, while ensuring greater resilience and autonomy in the event of future health crises and addressing the sector’s environmental footprint.   \nYet various R&D stakeholders are concerned that – in trying to strike a balance between myriad public and private sector interests – the Commission could inadvertently achieve the opposite. For example\, shortening EU patent protection on new therapeutics is intended to boost patient access to medicines\, but could persuade pharmaceutical companies\, scientists and investors to prioritise other regions to develop and commercialise breakthrough innovations in the future. Under such a scenario\, Europe’s whole health and life sciences community is likely to feel the chill\, with fewer resources over time to sustain its historical excellence in fundamental research\, international cooperation platforms\, and global scientific leadership. Both pharmaceutical and medical technology companies are closely watching the EU’s actions on data sharing. \nWhat ultimately emerges in terms of new directives and regulation will have a direct impact on pharmaceutical and medical technology R&D ecosystems everywhere – not just in terms of corporate investment and production planning\, but also attractiveness to venture capital\, public-private partnerships and top research talent\, among others. And perhaps more importantly\, it may influence Europe’s readiness to provide global leadership – both scientific and political – when the world is confronted with its next urgent health crisis.  \nOn 15 November\, the S|B Health & Life Sciences Day will therefore take as its central theme health innovation and the future of medicines development. It will explore the state of play at the interface between healthcare legislative and regulatory agendas and their R&D equivalents. It will also feature expert roundtables and debates on specific challenges and opportunities that will influence the next era of research-industry collaboration\, including issues such as data access and sharing across borders\, and the wider implications for health and life sciences in Europe. \nParticipants profiles \n\nScience: Vice-rectors\, deans of faculty\, heads of department\, institute\, or lab\, and senior researchers\nIndustry: R&D executives overseeing key projects\, pipelines and partnerships\, EU and Government Affairs teams\nPolicy: Key representatives from European institutions\, national ministries\, innovation agencies and international organisations

SUMMARY:Making waves: Is international R&I bringing a true blue economy within reach?
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, blue economy has moved steadily closer to the centre of political and policy radar screens around the world. Initially framed as the use of marine and maritime resources for economic growth\, the concept has expanded over time to the sustainable management and protection of ocean\, coastal and freshwater ecosystems – and along the way breathing fresh life into “nexus thinking” about the interrelationships between water\, energy and food. \nAs a nascent framework for planetary development\, blue economy holds vast potential\, but it also suffers from a lack of best practices\, clear governance and the limited scope and organisation of its applications to date.  Unsurprisingly\, the EU – along with the UN\, which launched the Decade of Sustainable Oceans in 2020\, and other like-minded countries – has been at the forefront of efforts to address these issues. Last year the European Commission launched one of its flagship missions under Horizon Europe to “Restore our Ocean and Waters”\, signalling the blue economy’s importance for its strategies in various policy areas\, ranging from energy to fisheries. The effort goes in parallel with the launch of the Sustainable Blue Economy co-funded partnership\, which aims at the creation of a climate-neutral\, sustainable and productive maritime economic area. \nNonetheless\, navigating in the darkness is not the best approach at sea\, and in this context research can provide a safe harbour. To reap the benefits coming from the marine environment\, and to avoid the depletion of its resources and its ability to help in the fight against climate change\, solid research\, data\, planning and cross-border cooperation will be crucial elements moving forward. This is already evident in some of the blue economy sectors that show the highest potential – from sustainable fishing and aquaculture\, to marine renewable energy and blue biotechnologies – but is equally true in more problematic domains like deep sea mining. Yet without clear scientific evidence of the impact of new practices and technologies\, the blue economy will suffer from barriers to implementation and a lack of investment. Both elements are crucial\, and they may well define if the blue economy is here to stay\, or just a passing wave. \nAgainst this backdrop\, what is the existing relationship between marine research\, the market and policymaking? How can a closer research-industry connection ensure start-ups\, innovative ideas\, and entrepreneurs the right incentives from the financial sector? How can regulators be presented with a clearer view of the benefits of sustainable marine environments in the context of wider political agendas? On October 12\, Science|Business will gather expert policymakers\, research experts\, industrial representatives and other key stakeholders to reflect on the knowledge value chains necessary to act on the blue economy’s potential. \n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSzilvia Nemeth\nDeputy Head of Unit\, European Commission (DG RTD)\n\n\n\n\n\nClaire Jolly\nHead\, Ocean Economy and Space Economy\, STI Directorate\, OECD\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Holthus\nFounding President & CEO\, World Ocean Council\n\n\n\n\n\nHannah Brocke\nCSO & Co-Founder\, Planblue\n\n\n\n\n\nAntonella Calvia-Götz\nInnovation Funding Advisor\, Projects Directorate\, European Investment Bank\n\n\n\n\n\nJoachim Claudet\nSenior Researcher & Ocean Advisor\, CNRS\n\n\n\n\n\nJennifer Laplante\nChief Growth and Investment Officer\, Ocean Supercluster Canada\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter De Schryver\nInnovations director at INVE AQUACULTURE\n\n\n\n\n\nEduardo Silva\nCoordinator\, TEC4SEA & Senior Researcher\, INESC TEC\n\n\n\n\n\nSteffen Knodt\nHead of Sustainable Ocean Business Centre\, Fraunhofer\n\n\n\n\n\nChristina Abildgaard\nDirector\, Department for Bioresources and Environmental Research\, Research Council of Norway\n\n\n\n\n\nØyvind Fiksen\nProfessor and Marine Dean\, University of Bergen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPartners

SUMMARY:2nd Science|Business Sector Day: Green Deal & Climate – The road to net-zero industry
DESCRIPTION:Watch the conference videos here \nThe European Green Deal is arguably the biggest ambition of the current European Commission and EU leaders agree on the need to accelerate Europe’s transition to a net-zero industry. While the EU agreed to invest part of its 1.8 trillion budget euros into accelerating the transition to a more sustainable economy\, it needs to get better and faster at moving tech ideas towards the marketplace. Several related questions arise\, among which: How Europe’s climate policies and tools can help set the right research and investment priorities to help make it happen? What are the key priorities for climate-related research in the short and medium terms\, and how can EU funding support and leverage the success of green tech incubators\, entrepreneurs and international cooperation? What is the responsibility of large corporations in the process? And how can Europe reposition value chains to obtain the resources it lacks while avoiding the creation of new dependencies? \nOn 18 and 19 September\, Science|Business will gather experts from industry\, research and policy to assess the state of play in the implementation of key aspects of the plan\, especially the Net-Zero Industry Act\, as well as the research needed to make it happen and other challenges ahead. \nDownload the event pack here.
