Project ATLAS experiment upgrade

Role overview

Job Description

INESC ID is looking for a researcher to engage under the scope of of project CERN/FIS-PAR/0033/2019 – ATLAS. The duration of the research fellowship is 3 months, starting in June 2021.

The large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN is being upgraded, to improve its performance. One of the detectors of the ATLAS/LHC experiment is TileCal, the Tile hadronic calorimeter, which is also undergoing an upgrade effort.

A Portuguese team from several Institutions is developing the high voltage (HV) system of the Tilecal for the upgrade, which includes the HVremote and HVsupplies boards that regulate the power delivered to photomultiplier tubes (PMT), and their control systems. The system was to be tested at Geneva’s CERN site, but due to the current health & safety constraints in Europe is being tested in Lisbon.

The selected candidate will work on some of the following tasks:

  • Setup of a test system to evaluate the response of PMTs excited by a light source, when using the new HV system prototypes supplying the PMTs active voltage dividers;
  •   Test of the next prototype of the HVremote board;
  • Design/test of aHV cable tester;

The candidate will be part of the ATLAS Portuguese team and will work with the TileCal upgrade team.

The candidates should have a Bachelor Degree in Engineering Sciences–Engineering Physics, or in related areas.

By the grant start date, the candidate must be enrolled in a MSc programme or in a non-degree programme.

Preference will be given to candidates who satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

i) who have a solid education in Electronics and Instrumentation and in detectors for High Energy Experimental Physics.

ii) with previous experience in PCB design CAD tools (Altium) and in the development of hardware test setups in Raspberry Pi or similar devices (embedded systems).

iii) who have previous experience with programming skills in C and Python.

The activity will be supervised by José António Soares Augusto Associate Professor at FCUL and researcher at INESC ID. INESC ID will integrate the grantee in the research team of the scientific advisor.

The fellowship is renewable, if the candidate is enrolled in a MSc program or a non-degree program.

Application period: 4 May 2021 – 18 May 2021.
