A new community has been created: Leadership in Research and Innovation in the Age of AI

On June 5 and 6, over 60 leading R&I administrators, managers, researchers, and policymakers met in Brussels and dived into “Leadership in Research and Innovation in the Age of AI”. The event was an initiative of INESC Brussels HUB, co-organised with the NCBR Office in Brussels and the European Commission, to whom we are incredibly grateful for their collaboration and enthusiasm since our proposal.

What for?

Together, the participants initiated a community to share insights and develop innovative strategies to face the challenges posed by AI in Leadership and Research & Innovation.

Why?

The importance of these discussions is evident. AI can reshape the fabric of R&I Leadership and it is crucial to advance the integration of AI into our R&I practices. Simultaneously, as stated by DDG Signe Ratso at the introduction of the event, the EU has the challenge of closing the gap with China and the US. She remarked, “AI-driven science extends beyond academia, fostering both innovation and economic growth”.

How?

Brilliantly guided by Dirk Stockmans and Oliver Kozak, facilitators of this event, the participants heard and reflected on the insights of the policy side (Liviu Stirbat), the industry (Ondreaj Socuvka) and a research state of play (Ricardo Migueis). Then, it was time for action. The participants discussed practical strategies for R&I leaders, pointing out new ways, obstacles and solutions to the current challenges.

By the end of the first day, we had the pleasure of meeting Ádám Gerencsér, editor of Sci Phi Journal, who shared a visionary perspective on the possibilities of AI through the lens of science fiction, leaving everyone inspired.

On the second day, the participants had the time to explore self-proposed subtopics in more depth, such as the impact and role of R&I leadership in AI transformation, social literacy in AI, AI in education, and GenAI for research funding organisations.

Thank you once again to everyone who was involved in this event. The goal of establishing the community has been successfully achieved. From now on, we will set our objectives as we go.

We are now working on this event’s report and looking forward to the next steps. If you are eager to learn more about it, get in touch!
