Susana Cardoso Freitas


Susana Cardoso de Freitas (born 1973) graduated in Technological Physics Engineering (Instituto Superior Tecnico, IST, 1996) and holds a Ph.D. degree in Physics (IST, 2002). In 2002 she was a “Co-op Pre-Professional Engineer” at IBM (USA).
Presently she is an Associated Professor at the Physics Department (IST) and Group Leader for the Spintronics and Magnetic Biosensors group at INESC-MN, where she is also one of the directors. She coordinated and participated in several EU and national projects, with a strong collaboration with the industry for advanced materials, devices and integrated systems for robotics, biomedical and industrial applications. Since 2019 she is one member of the “Ambassador for the Innovation” group at IST. She was a recipient of the Scientific Awards ULisboa/Santander in 2019. In 2018 she was selected as “100 Women in Science” by “Ciência Viva”.
She was an Associate Member Delegate to the European Physics Society (EPS) Council (2019) and was member of the General Council of the European Magnetism Association (EMA) for 2021-2023. She has more than 300 publications, 20 chapter books and 5 patents.
