INESC-ID Secures €27.2M for SAIL Centre of Excellence

INESC-ID has been awarded €27.2 million to establish the Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), a new Centre of Excellence focused on developing trustworthy and sustainable artificial intelligence.

Funded through the Horizon Europe Teaming for Excellence programme, the initiative brings together INESC-ID with the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems ( https://www.mpi-sws.org/) and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (https://www.dfki.de/en/web/about-us). The aim is to strengthen the link between advanced AI research and its application in real-world settings, while contributing to Europe’s leadership in responsible, human-centred AI.

The project represents a significant investment in Portugal’s research and innovation landscape, combining European funding with national support. Alongside its research activities, SAIL will also focus on skills development and collaboration with industry. This includes a joint Dual PhD programme with Instituto Superior Técnico (https://tecnico.ulisboa.pt/en/) and RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau (https://rptu.de/), as well as the creation of a Living Lab and an AI Ethics and Regulation Hub.

By bringing together research, education and innovation, SAIL is expected to support technology transfer, foster new business opportunities, and contribute to the development of a more sustainable and competitive European AI ecosystem.

This achievement follows over a year of dedicated work by the INESC-ID team, including Arlindo Oliveira, Inês Lynce, Rodrigo Rodrigues, Sandra Aresta, and Sílvia Castro.
