New position paper calls for stronger European RD&I investment in power system components
INESC TEC has joined 26 other European organisations in calling for stronger and more coordinated investment in research, development and innovation for electric power system components and grid-enhancing technologies.
The position paper, “Securing Europe’s electrified future through RD&I in electric power system components,” was developed through the EERA Joint Programme Smart Grids and has now been published by both EERA and JP Smart Grids and has now been published by both EERA and JP Smart Grids.
The document argues that Europe’s clean energy transition depends not only on expanding renewable energy generation, but also on modernising the electricity systems that connect, manage and distribute it. As electricity demand grows, Europe must address climate pressures, energy-security concerns, industrial competitiveness and increasing geopolitical dependencies.
Electric power system components are described as the backbone of electrification. They include next-generation grid components and enabling technologies for flexibility, digitalisation, monitoring, automation, optimisation and control. According to the signatories, sustained investment in these technologies is essential to improve the resilience, reliability and efficiency of Europe’s electricity system.
