INESC TEC contributes to European position paper calling for stronger FP10 support for energy systems

INESC TEC, together with 26 other organisations participating in the EERA Joint Programme on Smart Grids, has contributed to a new position paper calling for stronger European support for research, development and innovation (RD&I) in electric power system components and grid-enhancing technologies.
The publication, Securing Europe’s Electrified Future through RD&I in Electric Power System Components, comes at a timely moment as discussions on FP10, the European Competitiveness Fund and future EU energy policies gather pace.
Europe’s clean energy transition depends not only on renewable energy generation, but also on the electricity grids and power system technologies that connect, manage and deliver it. As electricity demand grows and electrification rises on the European policy agenda, sustained investment in RD&I for electric power system components will be essential for Europe’s competitiveness, energy security and strategic autonomy.
The position paper makes a strong case for reinforcing European support for collaborative research and innovation, improving alignment between industrial, energy and research policies, and strengthening Europe’s technological leadership in strategic grid technologies.
Its recommendations are particularly relevant as European institutions shape the next generation of industrial, energy and research policies, including FP10, the European Competitiveness Fund, the Clean Industrial Deal and the forthcoming European Grids Package.
The European Commission’s recently launched Electrify Now initiative further highlights the growing importance of electrification on the EU policy agenda. Turning these ambitions into reality will require strategic investment in grid innovation to keep pace with Europe’s electrification goals.
As Europe advances its climate, competitiveness and industrial objectives, the position paper offers a timely contribution to the ongoing debate on Europe’s energy future and the priorities for FP10.
