INESC ID is looking for two researchers to engage under the scope of project HATE COVID-19.PT, Detecting Overt and Covert Hate Speech in Social Media – Project number 759274510, funded by FUNDAÇÃO PARA A CIÊNCIA E A TECNOLOGIA. The duration of the two research fellowships is 6 months.
The researchers will be member of the research project HATE COVID-19.PT, Detecting Overt and Covert Hate Speech in Social Media, which seeks to contribute to the analysis and automatic detection of online hate speech in Portuguese, investigating the linguistic and rhetorical strategies underlying both overt and covert hatred content. Specifically, this project involves the creation of a large annotated corpus from social media, covering the Covid-19 pandemic, which will support the development of a machine learning prototype to detect hate speech, and assess its explicitness and intensity, considering the time period and geolocation data.
The selected candidates will:
1) work on the development of semiautomatic strategies for data collection and annotation, and on the creation of a prototype that demonstrates how the information in the annotated corpus can support hate speech detection
OR
2) work on the development of a prototype that demonstrates how the information in the annotated corpus can support hate speech detection.
The candidates should have a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or related areas.
By the grant start date, the candidate must be enrolled in a MSc programme or in a non-degree programme.
Preference will be given to candidates who satisfy one or more of the following criteria.
