Future communications systems must connect people, machines, sensors and autonomous platforms across increasingly complex environments. Beyond higher speeds and greater capacity, networks must also become more flexible, resilient, secure and energy-efficient, while supporting new applications across industry, transport, healthcare, energy, maritime systems and smart infrastructures.
Across the INESC network, research spans the full communications technology chain, from radio-frequency, optical and electronic technologies to network architectures, optimisation and deployment. By combining expertise in wireless systems, photonics, network design, IoT and communications for specialised environments, INESC contributes to the development of next-generation connectivity, including beyond-5G and 6G systems.
Research covers wireless communication networks, beyond-5G and 6G technologies, sub-THz and THz systems, advanced antennas, radio resource management and reconfigurable communications hardware. These capabilities support the development of high-capacity, adaptive networks for increasingly connected environments.
Expertise spans optical and RF transmission, optoelectronic technologies, microwave devices and antennas, and the convergence of electronic and photonic systems. Research also addresses chip-level communications and advanced hardware for future communications infrastructures.
INESC develops methods for advanced routing, network optimisation, virtualised cellular networks, quality of service, reliability, survivability and scalability. This research helps communications infrastructures remain efficient and connected even under demanding operating conditions, changing traffic patterns or network failures.
Research includes sensor and actuator networks, fog computing, cyber-physical systems, smart utilities and communications for transport and remote monitoring. INESC also develops technologies for challenging environments, including maritime, underwater, vehicular, airborne and space applications.
