A research career can take many different paths and depends, on the one hand, on the choices of the researcher. However, the organisational context surrounding the researcher is also of crucial importance. This assumes particular importance when we are talking about competing for the, arguably, most globally competitive research grant: the one awarded by the European Research Council.
