Editorial – Strategic Thinking for FP10: Setting the Stage for Success

As the EU prepares for the 10th Framework Programme (FP10) for Research and Innovation, it’s clear that strategic thinking will be the cornerstone of its success. INESC TEC will release (what we think is an innovative, deeply thought-through and objective) position paper that will underscore the importance of creating the right conditions for impactful and sustainable research and innovation.

The Importance of Strategic Thinking

In the rapidly evolving landscape of global research and innovation, the ability to anticipate challenges and leverage opportunities is crucial. Strategic thinking involves not just identifying which initiatives deserve funding, but ensuring that the framework supporting these initiatives is robust and adaptable. This forward-looking approach is essential for addressing critical societal challenges and maintaining Europe’s competitive edge.

Creating the Conditions for Success

The upcoming position paper from INESC TEC highlights that success in FP10 will depend on our collective ability to rethink and reimagine the conditions necessary for effective implementation. While funding allocation remains important, the key lies in establishing a framework that fosters innovation, collaboration, and resilience.

Key Insights from INESC TEC’s Position Paper

Without divulging too much, here are some thought-provoking insights and quotes from the forthcoming document that set the stage for a deeper understanding:

  1. Proactive Global Leadership: “Europe must adopt a proactive and strategic stance on global leadership in science, technology, and innovation. This involves not just keeping pace with global trends but setting the standards for future advancements.”
  1. Sustainable Ecosystems: “The development of cross-border research and innovation ecosystems is crucial. By harnessing the unique strengths of various regions, we can foster vibrant ecosystems that drive sustainable growth.”
  1. Future-Focused Funding: “Investments in emerging technologies with transformative potential are essential. A robust innovation pipeline that transitions ideas from the lab to the market will ensure Europe’s long-term competitiveness.”
  1. Excellence in Implementation: “To make FP10 genuinely transformative, we need significant changes in funding mechanisms and a focus on results. Implementing Objectives and Key Results (OKR)-based approaches can reshape project funding and management.”

A Glimpse into the Future

The full position paper, soon to be published by INESC TEC, will offer comprehensive recommendations aimed at reshaping the future of European research and innovation. By focusing on the broader strategic vision and creating the right conditions for success, FP10 can become a powerful catalyst for progress.

We invite you to stay tuned for the detailed unveiling of these insights, which will provide a roadmap for achieving impactful and sustainable innovation in Europe. Together, we can drive a more competitive, cohesive, and forward-looking European research landscape.
