Editorial: Why are we doing this? The new Morning Brief

In the European Research and Innovation (R&I) landscape, the call for dialogue, insightful analysis, and a forward-looking perspective on the unfolding narrative of R&I has never been more pronounced. Heeding the collective voice of our esteemed readership and the followers of the previous edition of The Insider Podcast, we unveil an evolved iteration of the Morning Brief. We are developing a forthcoming podcast series—a cerebral symposium helmed by myself, Ricardo Migueis, and Robbert Fisher. Fisher’s tenure in the EU arena, marked by a profound understanding of the Framework Programme’s evolution, promises to enrich our discourse substantially.

Thoughtful and critical questioning

The conceptual foundation of our podcast is firmly rooted in inquiry. The guiding tenet is the question “why?”. This interrogation covers it all: the underpinnings of our actions, the consequences thereof, and their broader significance. Encompassing policy, academia, industry, and beyond, our dialogues aspire to dissect and understand the multifaceted impact of R&I. Although the audio complement to our written brief is on the horizon, its imminent arrival promises a confluence of perspectives that are as compelling as they are essential.

The Deep Dive: An analytical space

The Deep Dive is not merely a segment; it is a platform for intellectual engagement, inviting contributions from the vast spectrum of the R&I community. This initiative seeks to transcend conventional discourse, offering a forum for rigorous examination and reflection on pivotal themes that command our attention. It is an invitation to challenge, to contribute, and to enlighten.

Thematic focus: A curated lens on R&I

In alignment with the eclectic interests that animate our community, we recalibrate our focus, presenting news clipping, developments, and insights through the prism of INESC’s thematic areas. This reorientation not only serves the immediate interests of our institutes but extends an olive branch to the broader R&I ecosystem. By interlacing discussions on cross-cutting issues such as infrastructures and open science with thematic insights, we pledge a holistic exploration of the R&I landscape.
